Sewer Line Repair Services That Get It Right the First Time

A bad smell in the yard that won’t go away, a drain that gurgles every time you flush, more than one fixture backing up at once. These aren’t small problems, they’re usually signs that something’s wrong further down your sewer line.

Your sewer line carries wastewater away from your home, and when it cracks, sags, or fills with roots, that waste has nowhere to go but back up. Depending on the damage, the fix might be a traditional dig to access the pipe directly, or trenchless repair, which fixes the line from the inside with little to no digging. Neither option is automatically the right one, it comes down to what’s actually happening underground.

Our licensed techs assess your line with a camera before recommending anything, so you know exactly what’s wrong and which repair method actually fits your situation. We never charge a travel fee or a diagnostic fee to take a look, and every estimate is honest and upfront before any work begins.

A damaged sewer line doesn’t improve with time. Left alone, it can lead to repeated backups, yard damage, and a problem that spreads to more of the line the longer it sits, turning a manageable repair into a much bigger one.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it’s worth finding out what’s actually going on underground. A quick call gets you a straight answer and a real plan to fix it, whichever repair method ends up making the most sense.

Flexible Financing for Sewer Line Repair

Sewer line repair can be a significant investment, especially if the damage calls for a bigger fix. Through Wisetack, you can check your financing options in seconds, with no pressure.

What to Expect for Sewer Line Repair Services

    1

    REQUEST SERVICE

Call us or fill out our online form and tell us what you're noticing, a bad smell, gurgling drains, or more than one fixture backing up at once. We'll ask a few questions to get the full picture before we arrive.

    2

    FREE ESTIMATE

A licensed technician runs a camera through your sewer line to see exactly where the damage is and how severe it is, so nothing gets decided based on a guess.

    3

    UPFRONT PRICING

Once we know what's actually going on, you'll get a clear, honest estimate for the repair, whether that's a trenchless fix or a traditional dig. No hidden charges show up later.

    4

    EXPERT SERVICE

Our tech completes the repair using the method that fits your line and yard, then verifies the fix with a follow-up camera pass to confirm everything's flowing the way it should.

From Gurgling Drains to a Bad Smell in the Yard, Here's What Usually Points to a Sewer Line That Needs Fixing

Common Sewer Line Problems We Fix

    • Multiple drains backing up around the same time
    • Gurgling sounds coming from toilets or drains
    • Sewage odor coming from the yard or a drain
    • Soggy or sunken patch of grass in the yard
    • Unusually green or lush patch of lawn over the line
    • Tree roots growing into the sewer pipe
    • Recurring clogs that keep coming back no matter what

A damaged sewer line rarely shows up as one obvious sign. It’s usually a combination, a smell here, a slow drain there, a patch of grass that’s greener than it should be. On their own, any one of these could mean something small. Together, they usually point to a real problem in the line.

The longer a sewer line problem sits, the more it tends to spread. A small crack lets roots in, roots widen the crack, and what started as a minor issue turns into a full blockage or collapse further down the line.

Trenchless Repair vs. Traditional Dig: What Fits Your Situation

A traditional dig repair means excavating down to the damaged section of pipe to access and fix it directly, which works well for isolated damage or when the line needs to be relocated. Trenchless repair fixes the line from the inside, using little to no digging, which usually means less disruption to your yard and a faster turnaround.

Which one fits your situation depends on where the damage is, how extensive it is, and the condition of the rest of the line. Our licensed techs walk you through both options after the camera inspection, so you’re choosing based on what your line actually needs, not just what’s cheaper upfront.

Why Licensed Techs Matter for Sewer Line Repair

Sewer line repair involves working with wastewater, navigating other underground utilities, and choosing a repair method that actually holds up over time. A misdiagnosed line or the wrong repair approach can mean digging up the same section twice. Our licensed techs use camera inspection to confirm the problem before recommending trenchless or traditional repair.

Helping You Choose the Right Solution

Once we know what’s going on in your line, we’ll walk you through which repair method actually fits, trenchless or traditional, and why. You get a clear recommendation based on your specific situation, not a push toward whichever job pays more.

    • Camera inspection before recommending any repair method
    • Trenchless versus traditional dig explained in plain terms
    • A price that matches the actual condition of your line

    Professional Sewer Line Service

On every sewer line job, our licensed techs confirm the damage with a camera, choose the repair method that fits your line and yard, and verify the fix afterward with a follow-up inspection. That’s the difference between a repair that lasts and one that needs a second visit.

We’re a family-owned company, and every sewer line job gets the same care we’d want at our own home. That means protecting your yard as much as the method allows, communicating clearly, and standing behind the repair once we’re done.

    Sewer Line Maintenance

Sewer lines don’t need constant attention, but knowing the early warning signs can help you catch a problem before it turns into a backup. A little awareness now can save a much bigger repair later.

    Core Maintenance Items

    • Watch for Recurring Clogs. A drain that clogs again and again despite cleaning is often a sign of a bigger issue further down the line.
    • Keep an Eye on Your Yard. Soggy patches, sunken areas, or unusually green grass over the line can be early signs of a leak or a break.
    • Schedule a Camera Inspection Periodically. For older homes or properties with a history of root intrusion, a periodic camera check can catch problems before they become emergencies.

Catching a sewer line problem early almost always costs less than waiting. Reach out and we’ll help you figure out what’s actually going on.

We had a rancid smell coming from our laundry room. They quickly came out and assess the problem and put in motion plans to fix it. Plumbing can be a terrifying repair for someone like me. What was needed was beyond what I could afford in one swoop. They graciously worked with me allowing me to split it up into 2 payments. Not only efficient, kind, honest, they have great customer service. I know I found my new plumber! I think you will too if you give them a shot!

As a real estate professional and a homeowner, I’ve learned that having the right people in your corner is everything. In this business, clients often become friends — and many become like family. When I refer someone to one of my vendors, I’m putting more than their name on the line. I’m putting my own reputation and my client’s trust in their hands. That’s something I take very seriously. I’m fortunate to have several plumbers I absolutely trust, and John and his crew have earned a place on that very short list. Recently, I was working with a buyer who was under contract on a home. We did exactly what we’re supposed to do — our due diligence, inspections, and further investigation when something didn’t seem right. We initially believed the home had an issue with the PRV/pressure-reducing valve. After John got involved and actually took the time to investigate the problem, we learned something important: the problem wasn’t with the home at all. It was a city water-pressure issue. Here’s the part that says everything about John and the way he does business. He didn’t charge my client. But even more impressive — he didn’t simply say, “It’s the city’s problem,” and walk away. John has had someone continue monitoring the situation so that once the city addresses its side of the issue, we can make sure this buyer — soon to be the new homeowner — isn’t left dealing with a problem after closing. Think about that. The job wasn’t his problem. There wasn’t an invoice to collect. There wasn’t anything forcing him to stay involved. He stayed involved because he cared about the outcome. That’s service. That’s integrity. And THAT is why relationships matter so much to me in real estate. I don’t want a list of vendors who simply answer the phone. I want people I can confidently put in front of my clients and know they’re going to care for them the same way I would. John and his crew have shown me that repeatedly. They show up, investigate the problem instead of guessing, communicate, and make every effort to ensure things are addressed properly — not just quickly. Anybody can provide a service. The people you remember are the ones who take ownership even when they don’t have to. John, thank you for taking care of my clients, protecting the relationship and trust I’ve built with them, and reminding me what exceptional service actually looks like. That’s the kind of person I’m proud to refer.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. Your trust means a great deal to John and our entire team, especially knowing that when you refer one of your clients to us, you’re trusting us with a relationship and reputation you’ve worked hard to build. Our goal is always to find the actual cause of the problem, communicate honestly, and do what’s right for the customer—even when that means there isn’t a repair for us to make. We truly appreciate your continued confidence in Paynes Plumbing & Electric and are grateful to be one of the companies you trust to take care of your clients. Thank you again for the kind words, the referrals, and for trusting us to be in your corner. We don’t take that lightly!

John Payne Plumbing and Electrical is absolutely exceptional. John and his crew recently replaced our old septic wastewater pump, installed a brand-new pump system, and replaced the float switches and alarm sensors. They also pulled entirely new electrical wiring, conduit, switches, breakers, and alarms from the house to the pump station.Throughout the entire process, they were honest, highly professional, and arrived exactly on time. They didn't just do the heavy lifting; they completed rigorous system testing and took the time to educate me on how the new setup operates. They were incredibly clean, picked up after themselves, and took great care of my property. It is rare to find such honest subcontractors who do high-quality work. Best of all, their pricing is very reasonable and they are not out to gouge their customers. I highly recommend them and will absolutely use them again in the future!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for the incredible review! We truly appreciate you trusting Paynes Plumbing & Electric with your septic wastewater pump replacement and the electrical work needed for the new system. Our team takes pride in doing the job right, thoroughly testing everything, keeping the work area clean, and making sure our customers understand how their new system operates. We’re grateful for your recommendation and look forward to being there whenever you need us in the future!

John and Jesse came out to Anderson County to locate a septic system on a property for a new construction They arrived within the given time frame, they called when on their way as we requested prior, they immediately assessed the situation and explained everything to us- my Grandparents are in their 90’s trying to get this project done and John was EXCELLENT with explaining it all , and went out of his way to consult with fellow professionals and help us figure out the next steps to take in the process. Both he and his employee were very patient, kind, respectful, and this man had so much knowledge on this stuff!!! We were so impressed by them - He didn’t charge a thing as our situation was different from the norm , HONEST PROFESSIONAL AND HUMAN DECENCY in these country boys- I’d recommend them every time!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for the thoughtful review! We’re glad John and Jesse were able to help locate the septic system, explain everything clearly, and help determine the best next steps. Why Choose Payne's for Sewer Line Repair

Frequently Asked Questions About Sewer Line Repair

Sewer line problems bring up plenty of questions, especially since most of the damage is out of sight. Here are the answers homeowners ask us most.

What is the average cost to repair a sewer line?

Cost depends on where the damage is, how extensive it is, and whether trenchless repair or a traditional dig makes more sense for your situation. We assess your line with a camera first and give you a firm, upfront estimate before any work begins, with no travel fee or diagnostic fee added on top.

Does homeowners insurance cover the main sewer line?

It depends on your policy and what caused the damage. Sudden, accidental damage is sometimes covered, while gradual wear like root intrusion or aging pipe usually isn’t. Check with your provider directly, and we’re happy to provide documentation of the repair if you need it for a claim.

Is it worth repairing a sewer line?

In most cases, yes. Repairing the damaged section is usually far less disruptive and less expensive than letting the problem spread to more of the line. The exception is a line that’s failing in multiple spots, where a full replacement may make more sense than repeated repairs.

Can you repair a sewer line without digging it up?

In many cases, yes. Trenchless sewer line repair fixes the line from the inside with little to no digging, which usually means less damage to your yard and a faster repair. Whether it’s the right fit depends on where the damage is and the condition of the rest of the line.

How long does sewer line repair take?

It depends on the repair method and the extent of the damage. Trenchless repairs are often completed in a day, while a traditional dig repair can take longer depending on how deep the line runs and how much excavation is needed. Your technician will give you a time estimate after the camera inspection.
